George Johnson Obituary

George Anthony Johnson Sr. (“Tony”) was born on September 20, 1954 in Houston, Texas.  He was the third born of 5 siblings to Theodore Johnson and jane Johnson, his parents.   He grew up on the northside of town in his early years in Trinity Gardens.  He attended Rosa Lee Easter Elementary school.   His parents moved to the southside of town in Riverside Terrace where he attended Roberts Elementary School.

 

George “Tony” graduated to Miller Junior High where he played football as a running back.  He was one of the best on the team.   He then graduated to Jack Yates High School where he continued to play football as a running back make headlines in the paper.   After graduating high school in 1974, George “Tony” decided to get married to the love of his life Charlotte Fontenett.   George “Tony” gave his life to Christ and was baptized by water and spirit as a member of Grace Congregational Church under Dr. R. L Finney in 1972.

Later in his life, he attended Shiloh Church Steps of Faith Ministries under Dr. Aposthe Naomi Y. Archie, until his passing.   George “Tony” went to work at Smith Industries for many years.  He also had a welding business and a handy man business for many years.    Later on in life he decided to have his own lawn service where he made a great impact on many people’s lives.   George “Tony” loved God, loved his family and loved people.   Tony also loved to cook.  He often bragged about how he was a chef cook from age 13 to age 18 at the local restaurants in Houston.  

On February 28, 2020, George “Tony” went home to be with the Lord.  He preceded in death his grandfather, Robert Stafford Sr., his grandmother Eldonia Stafford on his Mother’s side and his grandfather Earnest Johnson and grandmother Lovella Johnson on his Father’s side.   His father Theodore Johnson Sr., his brother Earnest Johnson, his grandson Joshua Gibson, and many uncles, aunts and cousins.

George “Tony” leaves to mourn his son, George Anthony Johnson Jr. (Lil Tony) and his wife Tahiti Johnson, his grandsons Jalen Johnson and Josiah Johnson, his mother Jane Ellen Johnson, his brothers Ricky Johnson and Theodore “Ted” Johnson, his sister Brenda Bob and Koquina Brown, his foster sisters Sonora Thomas and Tametria Thomas and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Services are scheduled for Saturday, March 14, 2020 at Good News Church, 8400 Boone Rd (Just South of Beechnut), Houston, Texas   77072.  Viewing will be at the church fro 10:00 - 11:00 AM, with services starting at 11:00 AM.
