Mr. Darell P. Powers, 91, of Missouri City, Texas, passed away peacefully on March 5, 2026 in Houston, TX. He was born on September 2, 1934, in Rapid City, South akota, to Walter P. Powers and Lois Q. Powers.
Darell grew up in Rapid City, South Dakota and Creston, Iowa where he graduated from high school. He then joined the Air Force, where he served from 1954 until 1957 following the Korean War. He earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Black Hills State College and a master’s degree in psychology from the University of Northern Colorado. He also attended barber school and worked as a barber in Sturgis, South Dakota, while pursuing his undergraduate degree. After college, Darell worked with the South Dakota Division of Services to the Blind and Visually Impaired and then spent most of his career working in the Social Work Department with the Veterans Administration Hospitals, notably, in South Dakota, Louisiana, and Texas. Darell enjoyed ice fishing, running, golf, baseball, and nutrition, and he was a faithful parishioner of Holy Family Catholic Church in Missouri City, Texas.
Darell was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ronald Powers; daughter, Madonna Powers; and son, Dennis Powers. He leaves behind his loving wife of 64 years, Lois Powers; his sons, Louis Powers (wife Josie), Thomas Powers, Nick Powers (wife Dawn), Sean Powers (wife Maureen), and Donald Powers; his grandchildren, Cody Powers, Brody and Cameron Powers, Austin and Patricia Powers, James and Michael Powers; and his great-grandchildren, Kai and Avery Powers.
Darell was an incredible husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. Funeral Mass will be held at Holy Family Catholic Church, located at 1510 5th Street in Missouri City, Texas, on Tuesday, April 14, 2026 at 11:00 AM.
Darell will be buried at Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, South Dakota during a private family ceremony. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Darell’s name to the American Heart Association or a charity of your choice.
